Each year in the United States, Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15. This month-long period provides an opportunity to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities throughout America.
At Fortune Brands, we believe that diversity plays a strong role in our success – different backgrounds and unique perspectives lead to more well-rounded teams and better-informed decisions.
We strive to create an environment where associates are respected, valued and celebrated for being their unique selves. Earlier this year, we strengthened our efforts by launching INSPIRA – the Hispanic and Latinx employee resource group – with a mission to support and promote cultural diversity by driving the professional development of Hispanic and Latinx associates within the company. By elevating inclusion within the organization, INSPIRA aims to empower Hispanic and Latinx individuals to achieve more and be successful. With a focus on promoting diversity, INSPIRA is open to all associates, not just those of Hispanic and Latinx heritage.
To mark Hispanic Heritage Month, INSPIRA has hosted a number of events focused on celebrating and informing associates across the organization about the significant impact of the Hispanic and Latinx communities.
INSPIRA kicked off the month by hosting an engaging panel discussion featuring Hispanic and Latinx leaders across the organization. During the event, these leaders shared their thoughts on the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month, how companies can do more to enhance DEI efforts, and how associates can celebrate Hispanic and Latinx culture.
Jorge Rascon, general manager, Mexico Operations, Security, emphasized that Hispanic Heritage Month is about more than just the Hispanic and Latinx communities.
“Sometimes people believe that we are celebrating for ourselves, but it’s really the opposite,” said Jorge. “We want to celebrate so that people from other cultures and backgrounds can come and learn from ours. It’s about bringing people from different cultures together.”
Throughout the month, INSPIRA is also sending educational emails to associates focused on sharing information regarding Hispanic and Latinx cultures. These messages highlight historical information regarding these cultures as well as current important topics. In addition, it’s hosting a trivia night for all INSPIRA members in early October focused on building relationships between associates.
The group is also encouraging associates to get involved in their local community’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
“Each community has their own events going on, and I encourage everybody to get out and take part,” said Ricardo Pineiros, senior director, Human Resources, Water Innovations. “These events are a way for everybody to celebrate and be exposed to these cultures, and ultimately that’s the best thing you can do.”
While the group is currently focused on Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s also looking ahead towards a long-term impact.
“We want to have a sustained impact on the organization and the communities where we live and work, said Ricardo. “It’s about more than just a few big events, we are looking to have a real, tangible long-term impact on the business.”
INSPIRA is open to all Fortune Brands associates, not only those of Hispanic and Latinx heritage. Associates can join INSPIRA, or any of the Fortune Brands Employee Resource Groups, by reaching out to their HR business partner to learn more.
